What to do if Prozac gets stuck in your throat?

There are a few things you can try if Prozac or any medication gets stuck in your throat. These include:

  • Try to wash it down with water
  • Eat something
  • Lean a little forward and try to swallow it

Try to wash it down with water

Gulping water is the best way to dislodge Prozac if it ever gets stuck in your throat. Some people just shove pills in their mouths and try to swallow them without water.

This practice is one of the common reasons why pills can get stuck in your throat. Water provides moisture and moves the pill downwards in your throat.

If you feel a pill stuck in your throat, try drinking large sips of water to push it down. Water is usually enough to dislodge a pill in most cases.

Eat something

If water doesn’t help you much or you feel like you need something heavier to push that Prozac down, eat something. I suggest eating something soft like chewing a piece of bread and swallowing it.

Soft foods will not damage your already irritated throat and will push the pill down. Hopefully, your Prozac will dislodge as you swallow that piece of bread.

Lean a little forward and try to swallow it

Leaning a little forward can help relax your throat muscles and make room for the pill to move. You can leave forward for a few minutes and try to sip some water. This can effectively dislodge the pill and push it down your throat.

What are the possible dangers of Prozac stucking in your throat?

Stuck Prozac capsule in your throat for a long period of time can cause disturbing side effects. A 2011 case study included a patient suffering from oesophagitis caused by a stuck Prozac pill (1). This condition can get quite painful as the drug starts to get released in your throat and causes irritation.

Prolonged exposure of your throat muscles to the drug can cause pain and inflammation, which gives off a terrible burning sensation. It can also cause choking, which could be dangerous if you don’t have anyone around to help and the pill doesn’t dislodge.

How to prevent Prozac from getting stuck in your throat?

Proper administration can prevent Prozac from getting stuck in your throat. Make sure you’re in a sitting position when you’re taking Prozac or any other medication.

Taking a pill while lying down is like planning to get it stuck in your throat. So, sit down, relax and then take the medication. Some people take meds without drinking water, which is not recommended.

Water moistens your throat and helps slip the pill down easily. Make sure you drink a sip or two of water and then swallow the pill, followed by a few more sips of water. This way, your tablet won’t get stuck in your throat.

If you find it difficult to swallow tablets, you can ask your pharmacist for a liquid formulation of Prozac – which can be mixed with juices and can be consumed easily.
