Can you mix liquid Prozac with juice?

Can you mix liquid Prozac with juice?

Yes, you can mix liquid Prozac with juice to mask the bitter taste of the medication – but don’t ever mix it with grapefruit juice or anything that has alcohol in it

Other than that, you can use Prozac with juices, milk, or soft foods like applesauce or pudding. However, it’s still best to try to take your medication as it is, but you can mix it.

Make sure you don’t let the mixture sit for too long and take it as soon as you make it. It is also not recommended to store the mixture for later use. Just make it at the time of dose administration and consume it while it’s fresh.

Letting medication sit for a long period of time can affect its purity. If you’re taking the drug yourself, I suggest keeping the mixture of juice and Prozac away from the reach of children, if you have any.

There are plenty of cases of such accidental drug administration in children and it’s best to avoid them before they happen.

Why should Prozac be never mixed with grapefruit juice?

This is because grapefruit juice can interfere with the metabolism of Prozac – a process which breaks the medication down and facilitates its elimination from the body (1).

High amounts of Prozac in your body for a long period of time can dangerously increase the level of serotonin, which can give rise to a rare but dangerous condition called ‘serotonin syndrome’ (2). This condition is associated with disturbing symptoms, including:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Fever with chills
  • confusion
  • Restlessness and fatigue
  • Headache, which often feels like your head is pounding
  • Changes in blood pressure and/or temperature
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Bradycardia
  • Tremors
  • Muscle twitching and muscle pain
  • Shivering and goosebumps

These symptoms can vary from person to person and can lead to life-threatening complications. This is why don’t ever mix Prozac and grapefruit juice together.

Prozac itself can make some people hyperactive, which can become much more intense if you combine it with anything that prolongs its duration of action. In case you accidentally end up doing so, call your local emergency helpline as soon as you can to be on the safe side.

It is also important to make sure that you avoid double dosing or adding more than one crushed tablet of Prozac in your juice. Doing so can increase the risk of Prozac-induced side effects.

Final words

To sum up, you can mix Prozac with juice for ease of administration. Just remember to not mix it with grapefruit juice or combine it with any other medication or supplement that can increase the amount of serotonin in your body.

If you are not sure how to properly do that or you are confused about the right method of drug administration, talk to your pharmacist.
