Should you take Amoxicillin with food?

You can take Amoxicillin with or without food. Since Amoxicillin is an antibiotic, it causes gastrointestinal side effects in some people, like nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, stomach pain, etc.

It is recommended that such people take Amoxicillin with food to prevent these side effects, as food acts as a barrier and utilises stomach acid for digestion.

If you can take it on an empty stomach without any gastrointestinal side effects, you can take it that way. You’re definitely not bound to have food in your system when taking Amoxicillin.

Common gastrointestinal side effects of Amoxicillin

Antibiotics are known to cause gastrointestinal side effects and Amoxicillin is no exception. Common GI side effects include (1):

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Gas or bloating
  • Loss of appetite
  • Indigestion
  • Cramping

If Amoxicillin is heavy on your stomach and causes the above-mentioned side effects, it’s best that you take it with food.

Some people may take Amoxicllin along with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Aspirin, etc to manage pain, fever, and inflammation associated with the ongoing bacterial infection.

The concomitant use of these meds can cause more pronounced GI side effects, as NSAIDs can also affect your gut.

However, you can take Probiotics with antibiotics if they cause GI side effects to replenish the loss of good bacteria that are essential for healthy gut functioning.

Important point: Take extended-release Amoxicillin with food

Amoxicillin is also available in an extended-release dosage form (Moxatag) which should be taken within an hour of taking your meals.

This is because this dosage form does not release the entire drug simultaneously. It is also recommended to take this formulation at the same time every day to maintain dose uniformity.

It is also important to ensure that you take Amoxicillin every other day for as long as your doctor has instructed you to. Amoxicillin may take some time to work, especially for severe infections – which is why proper drug usage is essential to eradicate the growth of infectious bacteria.
