Does Amoxicillin have Aspirin in it?

Does Amoxicillin have Aspirin in it?

No, Amoxicillin does not have Aspirin in it. Both of these meds are entirely different. They work differently, are used for different therapeutic purposes, and both are different side effect profiles.

Amoxicillin is a prescription antibiotic which is used for the management and treatment of bacterial infections. Aspirin, on the other hand, is an over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Why is Amoxicillin prescribed and how does it affect your body?

Amoxicillin is a bactericidal antibiotic that kills infection-causing bacteria. It is commonly used for the management and treatment of bacterial infections of the nose, ear, teeth and gums, throat, skin, genitourinary system, etc (1).

The usual duration of treatment with this antibiotic is 7-14 days, depending on the severity of your bacterial infection. Amoxicillin is commonly associated with the following side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal side effects, including nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea- side effects could be prevented by taking Amoxicillin with food
  • Dark coloured urine
  • Vaginal infections
  • Pale skin and eyes
  • Dizziness
  • Heart palpitations
  • Sore throat
  • Restlessness
  • Allergic reaction
  • Rash
  • Fungal infections in the mouth or vagina

Amoxicillin is also associated with some serious and rare side effects. Although it is a well-tolerated antibiotic, some people may experience unusual side effects or are allergic to this medication. Make sure you closely monitor your symptoms and report them to your healthcare provider.

Why is Aspirin used and how does it affect your body?

Aspirin is an OTC medication used to treat fever, pain, and inflammation. Aspirin inhibits Prostaglandin synthesis, which can also affect your blood’s ability to clot and overall platelet functions. This makes Aspirin a suitable medication to use as a blood thinner (2).

However, this Prostaglandin inhibition is the main reason why Aspirin is associated with a number of gastrointestinal side effects and it puts you at risk of GI bleeding. The commonly reported side effects of Aspirin include

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Acid reflux
  • Flatulence

Aspirin is also associated with some rare and serious side effects. These include:

  • An allergic reaction or hypersensitivity
  • Arrhythmia or abnormal heartbeat
  • Irregular breathing
  • Tremors
  • Bloody vomiting
  • Loss of hearing
  • Black or tarry stools – indicating gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Ulceration

Final words

To sum up, both Amoxicillin and Aspirin have their fair share of differences and they are used for different clinical purposes. Make sure you don’t take Amoxicillin without your doctor’s approval, and Aspirin if you already have a gastrointestinal disease.

Antibiotics, in particular, should always be used properly to make the most out of them. If you’re concerned about any of the side effects, reach out to your healthcare provider.
