Is Benadryl safe to take with Antibiotics?

Is Benadryl safe to take with Antibiotics?

Yes, Benadryl is considered safe to be used with the majority of antibiotics. Benadryl is a first-generation antihistamine which can counteract your allergy symptoms and can help you sleep if you have an active infection in your body.

So, taking Benadryl with antibiotics like Penicillins and Amoxicillin, Cephalosporins, Fluoroquinolones, etc is considered safe. However, there are a few exceptions

Benadryl can also be taken with meds that are used to mitigate antibiotic-induced GI side effects, like some OTC antiemetics, acid reducers like Pepcid, probiotics, etc.

Antibiotics that should not be paired with Benadryl

There are some antibiotics which are recommended not to take with Benadryl and some other antihistamines. These are:

Aminoglycosides

Benadryl should not be paired with Aminoglycosides, a class of antibiotics which is considered ototoxic in nature, meaning they can damage your hearing or specifically target your otic cells (1).

The common symptoms associated with such a condition include dizziness and ringing in the ears (Tinnitus), which could get reversed by Benadryl. As these symptoms will be masked, you will not be able to identify the danger surrounding your health.

Minocycline

Another antibiotic that shouldn’t be paired with Benadryl is Minocycline injection, which can depress your CNS. Benadryl does the same and the concomitant use can increase the risk of these side effects.

Other than the mentioned antibiotics, the rest can be safely taken with Benadryl. However, you should still ask your doctor about this if you are starting a new antibiotic that you have never taken before and you’re not sure how it makes you feel.

Final words

It’s best not to pair Benadryl with Aminoglycosides and Minocycline, or any other antibiotic you could be allergic to.

It’s smart to give at least 2 to 3 days to see if you’re not allergic to the antibiotic before starting to use Benadryl with it, as Benadryl will mask the allergy symptoms and you won’t be able to figure out that you’re allergic to a certain antibiotic.

In case of an allergic reaction, immediately seek medical attention or call your local emergency helpline. If you want to take a lower dose, you can cut or split Benadryl tablets. However, make sure you discuss this with your doctor.

It is also important to make sure that you take your antibiotic with food to minimise gastrointestinal side effects. Benadryl and other antihistamines can be taken with or without food.
