Does citalopram cause burping? (+3 factors)

In this article, we will discuss whether citalopram causes burping. We will also discuss the research studies linking the use of citalopram to the occurrence of burping. Additionally, we will discuss the risk factors that may increase the risk of experiencing burping and other side effects of citalopram.

Does citalopram cause burping?

Citalopram may cause burping. However, it is not a common side effect of this medication. Individual responses to medication may vary and some individuals do experience burping with citalopram along with other gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal discomfort, and acid reflux (1).

Generally, citalopram is an antidepressant medication that is frequently employed in the management of various mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is usually considered a safe medication however some individuals may experience headaches, fatigue, dry mouth, and other related side effects at the start of treatment.

What does research suggest?

While there is limited research on the occurrence of burping while on citalopram, various research studies have reported other gastrointestinal side effects of citalopram in patients that may indirectly contribute to burping while using this medication.

Burping is a very common complaint observed in clinical settings while taking various antidepressant medications including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (2).

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the use of citalopram is linked to the occurrence of various gastrointestinal side effects, including gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux, flatulence, and gastroenteritis. These side effects are usually accompanied by various symptoms, including burping or belching (3).

What factors may increase the risk of burping while on citalopram?

There are several factors that may increase the risk of persistent burping while taking citalopram. Some of these factors may include:

Individual sensitivity  Individual sensitivity to medications including citalopram increases the risk of experiencing the rare side effects of medication such as bleaching or burping with citalopram and other antidepressants.
Concurrent medications  The concurrent use of citalopram with other medications that are most likely to cause burping, such as fluoxetine or Wellbutrin, increases the risk of experiencing persistent and bothersome burping.
Underlying medical conditions Individuals with underlying gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, or gastroesophageal reflux disorders are more likely to experience this side effect of citalopram.

What to do if persistent burping occurs while on citalopram?

Side effects like burping are uncommon with citalopram and even if they occur, they usually subside after a few weeks of treatment. However, if you experience persistent and bothersome burping while using citalopram, you should consult your healthcare provider.

They may assess your symptoms and determine whether they are linked to citalopram or other underlying risk factors. In the presence of risk factors, your healthcare provider may address the risk factors first. If your symptoms do not improve after that, they may recommend changes in your treatment plan by either dosage adjustment or discontinuation of medication.

It is important to note that the decision to discontinue citalopram is only taken in cases where the risks of treatment outweigh its potential benefits. In such cases, your healthcare provider may recommend you switch to another medication that is less likely to cause these side effects as compared to citalopram.

What are the management tips for burping?

Burping usually does not have any serious effect on the quality of life of a patient. However, in cases of citalopram-induced persistent burping, your healthcare provider may recommend you follow the following management tips:

  • Chew your food thoroughly to reduce the amount of air swallowed.
  • Avoid carbonated beverages as they can contribute to gas and burping.
  • Drink plenty of water, but avoid excessive drinking during meals.
  • Caffeine can stimulate acid production so you should limit its intake.
  • Opt for vegetables with lower gas content.
  • Peppermint oil may help relax the digestive tract.
  • Using ginger tea may aid digestion and improve your symptoms.
  • Spices may contribute to burping; identify and limit them.
  • Betaine HCL supplements may aid in stomach acid production.
  • Chewing fennel seeds may help reduce gas.

In my experience

In my experience, patients commonly report gastrointestinal side effects after using citalopram, especially during the initial stages of treatment. However, the occurrence of burping is rarely reported in the clinical settings. Citalopram is generally considered a safe medication and it causes mild to moderate side effects that rarely affect the quality of life of the patients.
