Can citalopram cause skin problems? (+3 factors)

In this article, we will discuss whether citalopram causes skin problems. We will also explore the research studies examining the use of citalopram in causing skin issues. Additionally, we will discuss the factors that may increase the risk of citalopram-induced skin issues and the management tips for them.

Can citalopram cause skin problems?

Citalopram does cause skin problems. However, skin-related side effects of this medication are uncommon and not everyone who takes this medication experiences them. Generally, citalopram is an anti-depressant medication that is commonly employed in the management of depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

The most common skin-related side effects of citalopram may include (1):

  • dry skin
  • acne
  • bruises
  • swelling
  • itching
  • allergic reactions
  • rash

What does research suggest?

Extensive research has conclusively demonstrated that SSRIs including citalopram possess the ability to cause skin dryness, irritation, and rash. It is even capable of inducing allergic contact dermatitis in some individuals. These findings highlight the potential of citalopram, to penetrate the skin and trigger skin inflammation and rash (2).

According to a research study, a patient who was taking 10 mg of citalopram for depression, experienced skin itching and erythema just a few days after starting the medication. This suggests a possible link between the use of citalopram and skin reactions (3).

What factors may influence citalopram-induced skin problems?

Several factors may increase the risk of skin-related side effects of citalopram. These factors may include the following:

Individual sensitivity  Individual responses to medications may vary and some individuals are genetically more susceptible to experiencing the skin-related side effects of medications including citalopram.
Concurrent medications The use of citalopram with other medications such as Adderall, increases the likelihood of experiencing skin problems.
Underlying medical conditions Individuals with a history of skin-related diseases such as dermatitis, psoriasis, or eczema are more likely to experience skin-related side effects of citalopram.

What to do if citalopram causes skin problems?

If you experience skin-related side effects such as skin rash, swelling, bruises, or dryness after using citalopram, you should consult your healthcare provider. They may assess your symptoms and determine whether they are linked to citalopram.

In cases where citalopram is causing or exacerbating your symptoms, your healthcare provider may advise you to be patient as these side effects usually subside after weeks of treatment.

However, if your symptoms remain persistent even after weeks of treatment, your healthcare provider may recommend some changes in your treatment plan by either adjusting the dosage of citalopram or switching it to another medication that is less likely to cause skin-related side effects as compared to citalopram, such as Wellbutrin

How to manage citalopram-induced skin problems?

The management of skin-related side effects caused by citalopram may involve a personalized treatment approach, based on your individual symptoms and overall health status. Healthcare providers usually recommend the following management tips for managing your symptoms:

  • Drink an adequate amount of water daily for skin hydration.
  • Choose gentle skincare products suitable for your skin type.
  • Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply as needed.
  • Physical activity improves circulation and overall skin health.
  • Use a hydrating moisturizer to combat dryness.
  • Avoid picking or squeezing your acne.
  • Stimulate blood circulation through gentle massages.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes to prevent skin irritation.
  • Apply diluted tea tree oil for acne-prone skin.
  • Incorporate witch hazel into your skincare routine for toning.
  • Opt for a diet rich in whole foods for overall skin health.
  • Place cucumber slices on the eyes to reduce puffiness.
  • Start your day with lemon water for skin detoxification. Use coconut oil for added moisture.

In my experience

In my experience, patients rarely report skin-related side effects while on citalopram. However, these side effects may occur frequently in individuals with underlying skin disorders which can be related to their health conditions but exacerbated with citalopram. It is important to discuss your health conditions as well as the medication you are taking with your healthcare provider before starting any medication, to avoid unwanted side effects.
