Can you get high on Hydroxyzine pamoate?

Can you get high on Hydroxyzine Pamoate?

No, you can not get ‘high’ on Hydroxyzine pamoate. It is an antihistamine used for the management of allergy symptoms and anxiety.

If we talk about normal therapeutic doses of Hydroxyzine – 25 to 100 mg 3-4 times a day (depending on the condition for which you’re taking this medication) – the drug does not make you high (1).

Hydroxyzine does calm you down, reduce anxiety, and prepare you to sleep, but it does not induce euphoria or a state of over-excitation (2). If we talk about overdosing on medication, many such cases have been reported in the past. (3)

In one case, the patient took ten 50 mg (500 mg) of Hydroxyzine tablets and fell asleep right away. The symptoms of waking up were nausea, vomiting, headache, and an overall feeling of body weakness – but the patient did not get ‘high’ in any way (3).

Similar other cases with even higher doses were reported, and again there were no euphoric effects observed. So no, you can not get high on Hydroxyzine. Make sure you take this medication only as much as your condition demands.

How is Hydroxyzine Pamoate different from drugs that get you high?

Hydroxyzine pamoate is different from drugs that produce a “high” because it belongs to a class of medications called antihistamines. Antihistamines like Hydroxyzine Pamoate are primarily used to relieve symptoms of allergies, such as itching, sneezing, and runny nose (1,4).

They work by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic reactions. Hydroxyzine pamoate does not have the same psychoactive properties as drugs that are commonly abused or used recreationally to induce euphoria (1,4).

It is generally considered safe and non-addictive when used as prescribed by a healthcare professional. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and guidelines provided by your doctor to ensure the safe and appropriate use of Hydroxyzine Pamoate.

Can Hydroxyzine Pamoate cause side effects?

  • Drowsiness
