Can Lexapro cause tinnitus?

Can Lexapro cause tinnitus?

Lexapro may cause tinnitus in some people, but it is a rare side effect. Most people who did get tinnitus on Lexapro reported the onset of symptoms after 3-4 weeks of using this antidepressant.

Most such cases are reported after weeks of using Lexapro and it is not an early side effect of this antidepressant. The exact reason why Lexapro causes tinnitus in some people and not in others is not fully known.

However, experts believe that the excess of serotonin may cause hyperactivity of nerve cells which support hearing, and you may make you hear constant ringing. Some cases of tinnitus are also reported with Lexapro withdrawal.

Make sure you reach out to your healthcare provider if you hear ringing in your ears. Don’t stop using Lexapro without your doctor’s approval.

What does research suggest?

There is limited research on tinnitus caused specifically by Lexapro. However, research does suggest that there is a possible link between tinnitus and SSRI antidepressants in general. Some studies have indicated that tinnitus could be linked to serotonin signalling (1).

Since SSRIs selectively increase serotonergic activity, they can trigger tinnitus in some people. The incidence of this side effect is not high and only a few cases are reported.

Experts believe that some people may be more sensitive to tinnitus caused by SSRIs and they might have a pre-existing health condition that could contribute to this side effect (2).

Some people may take any other tinnitus-causing medications along with Lexapro, which can increase the intensity of this side effect.

What to do if Lexapro causes tinnitus?

Talk to your healthcare provider if you think Lexapro is causing tinnitus. Your doctor is your best bet to deal with this side effect. Your doctor may try dose reduction at first to give your body some more time to recover from the side effects.

However, that doesn’t work in some cases. If you continue to feel that ‘ringing’ sound in your ears, your doctor may suggest Lexapro discontinuation.

There are some things that can be done for symptomatic relief as it’s extremely difficult to treat tinnitus. Some of them include:

  • Noise cancelling devices – which help to manage the annoying ringing sound in your ears. This helps you relax.
  • Ear wax removal – which can help tone down the symptoms of tinnitus. The more ear wax you have, the more prominent your tinnitus symptoms usually get.
  • Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) and Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) – Approved therapies to help you learn how to cope with the symptoms associated with tinnitus
