Can Lexapro cause heart palpitations?

Lexapro can cause heart palpitations in some individuals. This side effect is common in people who are new to Lexapro or antidepressants in general.

The exact reason why Lexapro causes heart palpitations are not fully known, but the activity of excitatory chemicals in your brain can make your heart beat harder and faster.

Lexapro is generally considered safe to be used in cardiac patients, but don’t use it unless prescribed by your healthcare provider. Heart palpitations are also common when the dose is escalated, but they do get better within a few weeks.

What to do if Lexapro causes heart palpitations?

Talk to your healthcare provider if Lexapro causes heart palpitations. Lexapro is considered safe for cardiac patients, but it can cause QT prolongation in some people.

This is why it’s extremely hard to predict the effects of Lexapro unless you actually take the medication. Heart palpitations, although they are generally harmless, should be monitored properly to make sure the antidepressant isn’t affecting your heart.

It is also important to not stop taking Lexapro or change the dose without first consulting your doctor.
