Can you take Benadryl and Claritin together?

Can you take Benadryl and Claritin together?

It is not generally recommended to take Benadryl and Claritin, or any two antihistamines together unless prescribed by a healthcare provider. In most cases, one antihistamine is sufficient enough to deal with your allergy symptoms and you don’t need any more of that.

However, two antihistamines can be prescribed in case of severe allergic reactions. Generally, you should not take two antihistamines at the same time or even on the same day

It is also not recommended to take other Diphenhydramine-containing formulations with Claritin, such as Dimetapp.

Why is it not recommended to use Benadryl and Claritin together?

As I just stated, both Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) and Claritin (Loratadine) are antihistamines. They both work in the exact same way and inhibit histamine receptors to control your allergy symptoms.

Since the mechanism of action of same, they may end up causing additive side effects when used together. These include (1,2):

  • Dry eyes
  • Xerostomia or dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty in urination

Excess sedation or drowsiness is not considered an additive side effect in this case, as most people would think. This is because Benadryl is a first-generation antihistamine and hence it is sedative in nature.

Claritin, on the other hand, is a newer second-generation antihistamine that does not cause drowsiness or sedation as a side effect. Since only one antihistamine is drowsy in this case, you are not likely to experience excessive sedation on Benadryl and Claritin.

Advice from your pharmacist

It’s best not to take two antihistamines together, no matter which ones you’re willing to take. If you think one antihistamine is not enough to deal with your symptoms efficiently, reach out to your healthcare provider.

It is not recommended to take two anti-allergy medications on your own as you never know how your body will react to two meds that work in the exact same way.

Although Claritin is non-sedative, the practice of taking two antihistamines together can accidentally lead you to take two sedative medications, which will most likely cause excessive sedation and will impair your mental alertness.

For example, common OTC cold medications like NyQuil (Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, and Doxylamine) contain sedative antihistamines and they are often taken together with Benadryl. This increases the risk of excessive sedation.

This is why it is important to make sure that you don’t accidentally combine such meds together. If you are confused about the ingredients added to common cold and flu medications, please seek a pharmacist’s advice.
