Can you take Benadryl and Allegra together?

Can you take Benadryl and Allegra together?

It is not recommended to take Benadryl and Allegra together. Both Benadryl and Allegra are antihistamines and they literally work in the exact same way. If you’re already taking either one of them, you don’t need to take another, at least in most cases.

Even if some cases require you to use these two together, it should not be done at the same time and should only be done occasionally. In general clinical practice, it is not advised to use Benadryl with any other antihistamine, including Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin, etc.

In some cases, you can take them on the same day but even that is discouraged in most cases – as one antihistamine is usually enough to manage the symptoms.

It is a known fact that antihistamines are taken once a day. Even the same antihistamine, such as Allegra, should not be taken more than once unless you are dividing the daily dose into two small doses.

What are the potential side effects of combining Benadryl and Allegra?

Continuous use of Benadryl and Allegra together can increase the risk of some disturbing side effects. These include (1,2):

  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness

These side effects can vary from person to person and obviously depend on the dose and frequency of drug administration. As I stated earlier, one of them is enough to use in most cases.

Make sure you take your meds properly to make the most out of them and to stay safe from the side effects. If you have any other questions, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

What to do if you have taken Benadryl and Allegra together?

If you have taken Benadryl and Allegra together and you feel unusual, immediately seek medical attention. Although it is not likely to suffer from disturbing consequences just after taking the two antihistamines once or twice.

It’s the repeated use of these medications that can put your health at significant risk. However, people are different and they can respond differently to medications.

Patient-specific factors like age, weight, dosage strength, concomitant use of other medications, any underlying health conditions, and overall genetics can make a difference. This is why it’s best to avoid using two antihistamines together.
