Can you take Benadryl after taking Allegra on the same day?

Can you take Benadryl after taking Allegra on the same day?

No, it is not recommended to take Benadryl before or after taking Allegra. This is because both Benadryl and Allegra are antihistamines.

Benadryl is a first-generation anti-allergy medication that causes drowsiness as the most common side effect and hence is sometimes used as a sleep aid.

Allegra, on the other hand, is a second-generation antihistamine which does not cause drowsiness. The two meds are not meant to be taken together or even on the same day as one is enough to make your allergy symptoms better.

You don’t have to take two. However, if you have been taking Benadryl as a sleep aid, it is not a promising solution and you should maintain better sleep hygiene instead of relying on meds. It is also important to make sure that you don’t pair Benadryl with other sleep aids, like benzodiazepines

What are the dangers associated with the use of Benadryl and Allegra together?

As Benadryl and Allegra both are antihistamines, they work in the same way. They both block histamine receptors and prevent histamine from binding to them.

This leads to lesser allergy symptoms as histamine is an allergy mediator. When you take two of such meds, the side effects may become addictive. These include (1,2):

  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Upset stomach

These side effects can vary from person to person, depending on how frequently and how much of these two meds you have been taking.

This is why it’s best to not take two antihistamines together and to not rely on Benadryl for better sleep quality. Benadryl may not help you fall asleep after a few nights and the long-term use of this med is associated with dementia.

What to do if you have taken Benadryl and Allegra together?

If you have taken Benadryl and Allegra together and you feel unusual, please seek medical attention. In general, it’s nothing to worry about. A dose or two won’t harm you and the mild side effects will most likely fade away when the concentration of both of the meds drops in your body.

However, it’s not a good thing to continue using them together as long-term use can cause far more damage than just a few doses. Benadryl or Allegra should not be paired with each other or any other antihistamine like Zyrtec, Claritin, etc as doing so will not result in an increased anti-allergy effect.
