Can you take Allegra twice a day?

You can take Allegra twice a day, depending on what dosage strength you have at hand. The maximum daily dose of Allegra is 180 mg.

If we talk about the available dosage strengths in the market, Allegra is available as 60 mg and 180 mg tablets. The 180 mg formulation says ’24 hours’ on the packaging which clearly indicates that the med is supposed to be taken once each day.

If you’re taking 60 mg of Allegra, you can take it twice a day. This is what you have to be careful about. If you’re already taking 180 mg formulation, taking it twice will result in a total of 320 mg of Allegra, which exceeds the daily maximum dose.

Side effects associated with the use of Allegra

Allegra is associated with some side effects which may affect you more if you take a higher-than-recommended dose. Some of the commonly reported side effects include (1):

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Upset stomach
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Back pain
  • Muscle or joint pain

It is important to note that not everyone will experience these side effects after taking an extra dose of Allegra. People are different and they generally respond differently to medications. Taking a higher dose of antihistamine will not benefit you any more than taking the recommended dose.

It is also important not to pair Allegra with another antihistamine, including commonly used meds like Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec, etc. Taking two anti-allergies will not provide you with an enhanced antihistaminic effect and may increase the risk of certain side effects.

Pharmacist’s advice

If you’re taking 180 mg of Allegra every day but you’re still struggling with your symptoms, talk to your healthcare provider instead of increasing your dose on your own.

You might have some other underlying cause of your allergy. Your doctor will properly diagnose the condition and prescribe the best possible medications to help you get better.
