Why does Adderall make you tired?

Why does Adderall make you tired?

Adderall is rarely associated with causing tiredness or fatigue in people with ADHD by relaxing their minds. Adderall in an Amphetamine – a CNS stimulant.

Tiredness is not something commonly expected from such medications, but it could rarely happen. This surprising side effect was only observed in people with ADHD.

Some experts believe that since the medication manages the symptoms associated with ADHD, it could make some people feel better and mentally relaxed.

This relaxation can make you feel tired or sleepy. However, this is a rare side effect and it usually begins to subside within a few weeks. It is usual for stimulants to cause tiredness or sleepiness, but people are different and can respond differently to medications.

What does research suggest?

There is limited research on Adderall-induced tiredness, as the drug is a stimulant and it’s commonly known for increasing energy levels. Research suggests a few possible reasons for this (1).

One reason is that Adderall affects the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine and norepinephrine (2,3). These neurotransmitters play a role in regulating wakefulness and alertness.

When someone takes Adderall, it can increase the release and activity of these neurotransmitters, leading to increased alertness and reduced fatigue.

However, in some individuals, the stimulant effects of Adderall may wear off quickly, causing a “crash” effect that can result in fatigue or tiredness. This ‘crash’ is also common with other stimulants, like Vyvanse.

Another possible reason is individual differences in how the body responds to Adderall. Each person’s body chemistry is unique, and some individuals may have a different response to the medication.

Additionally, the dosage and timing of Adderall can also influence its effects on sleep and fatigue. Taking too high a dose or taking it too late in the day can interfere with normal sleep patterns, leading to fatigue the next day.

What to do if you feel tired on Adderall?

As I stated in the previous section, it is highly unlikely to feel tired on Adderall, but some people may feel that way. However, it usually subsides once your body adjusts to the effects caused by Adderall.

If you don’t feel better within a few days and you continue to feel tired and exhausted after taking Adderall, it’s best to report your side effects to your healthcare provider.

There could be other factors contributing to your tiredness or some other medication that may interact with Adderall or counteract its effects. This is why you should consult your healthcare provider right away. Remember, don’t stop using Adderall without your doctor’s approval.
