What is the difference between Benadryl and Unisom?

What is the difference between Benadryl and Unisom?

The difference between Benadryl and Unisom is that they contain different active ingredients. Benadryl contains Diphenhydramine, whereas Unisom contains Doxylamine. (1,2)

Although Benadryl and Unisom contain different active drugs, they do work in almost the same way. Both are first-generation antihistamines and cause sedation – which is why they are added in several nighttime cold and flu formulations (1,2).

You can take either one of them, whichever suits you best. However, they should never be used at the same time because of additive side effects. If you think one antihistamine is not working efficiently to make your symptoms go away, talk to your healthcare provider.

It is not recommended to take two antihistamines together, no matter which ones they are. If your condition demands it and your doctor thinks you can benefit from not one, but two antihistamines, he/she will adjust the doses and guide you accordingly.

Never take Benadryl with another antihistamine-containing OTC formulation like NyQuil or ZzzQuil, which also contains a sedative antihistamine. (3). If you are not sure what active ingredients are present in common cold and flu OTC medications, please talk to your pharmacist.

How to choose between Benadryl and Unisom?

To choose between them, consider your specific needs. If you’re experiencing allergies and occasional sleeplessness, Benadryl may be a suitable option, providing relief for both issues.

If your main concern is sleeplessness, Unisom might be a better choice due to its stronger sedative effects (1,2). However, always consult with a healthcare provider before using any medication, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.

can help you make an informed decision based on your individual needs and health status. It is not generally advisable to keep taking OTC sleep aids without consulting your doctor.

Final words

In conclusion, the main difference between Benadryl and Unisom lies in their active ingredients. They both work as sedatives and antihistamines, but they contain different drugs.

It is crucial to choose the one that best suits your specific needs, whether it’s for allergy relief with occasional sleeplessness or primarily for sleep aid.

However, never take both medications together, and always seek advice from a healthcare provider before using any medication, especially if you have other health conditions or are taking other drugs.
