What is the difference between Benadryl and Dramamine?

Benadryl and Dramamine are both antihistamines which work in almost the same way, but they do contain some differences. Benadryl consists of Diphenhydramine, whereas Dramamine contains Dimenhydrinate.

How does Dimenhydrinate resemble Diphenhydramine?

Dimenhydrinate resembles Diphenhydramine because it is actually made up of Diphenhydramine chemically bonded with 8-Chlorotheophylline. Since it is the combination of two chemicals, Dramamine works a lot like Benadryl, but it is not as sedating as Benadryl.

This is because 8-Chlorotheophylline does not cause drowsiness as it works as a stimulant and is closely related to caffeine. This stimulatory effect cancels out some of the sedation and that’s how Dramamine is different from Benadryl.

Both of these meds can be used for a variety of symptoms. You can take Dramamine if sedation is what you are concerned about.

Can you take Benadryl and Dramamine together?

No, you should not take Benadryl and Dramamine together. Both of them are antihistamines and it is not recommended to take two antihistamines together. This is because they both have similar mechanisms of action as well as side-effect profiles.

If you are taking one antihistamine and you think it’s not sufficient enough to help your symptoms, please reach out to your healthcare provider. In general clinical practice, it is not advised to use Benadryl with any other antihistamine, including Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin, etc.

What are the potential side effects of combining Benadryl and Dramamine?

The combined use of Benadryl and Dramamine can increase the risk of side effects. These include (1,2):

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Tremors
  • Sweating
  • Flushing

This is why antihistamines should not be paired together unless prescribed by your healthcare provider. This is because healthcare professionals adjust the doses when they combine medications to maximise the benefits and minimise the side effects.

So make sure you consult your doctor before combining similar medications.
