What are the uses of 5mg Prednisone?

Prednisone is used for the following health problems:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Inflammation
  • Blood diseases
  • Skin conditions – Psoriasis, Eczema, etc.
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases – Ulcerative Colitis
  • Immune system disorders – mostly autoimmune diseases as Prednisone can inhibit immune functions.
  • Certain types of cancers
  • Prevent organ rejection after organ transplant

Prednisone is a Corticosteroid that inhibits your body’s immune response to allergies and other disorders. This provides symptomatic relief. In the case of organ transplant, the immune system sometimes fails to accept the new organ as a part of the body and starts to attack it.

This is called ‘Organ rejection’. Prednisone, as it inhibits immune responses, is used so that your body accepts the organ and it starts to function properly.

Once it’s settled, the immune system accepts it as well. In the case of autoimmune diseases, your immune system mistakenly starts to attack the normal, healthy cells of your body.

Prednisone blocks the attack and provides symptomatic relief. However, continuous use of steroids is dangerous and must be avoided. When it comes to discontinuing using Prednisone after a long time, a proper taper schedule should be followed to prevent any withdrawal effects.

If you are using a Prednisone 6-day dose pack, make sure you use it in the right way to avoid the risk of side effects or therapeutic failure. Prednisone is also available in a 12-day dose pack, which contains 48 tablets.
