Should you take Melatonin with food?

No, it is not recommended to take Melatonin with food. Melatonin is a supplemental hormone that is generally used for sleep disturbances. 

Since it is a supplement and not an actual medication, you can safely take Melatonin on an empty stomach. It does not increase your stomach acidity or cause any other gastrointestinal side effects. 

So, you shouldn’t worry about taking it without having any food in your system. 

Benefits of taking Melatonin on an empty stomach 

Melatonin is recommended to take on an empty stomach so that it gets absorbed in a better way. 

The presence of food not only delays the absorption of Melatonin but also reduces the plasma concentration of this supplement. Lesser concentration means lesser therapeutic efficacy (1). 

This is why it’s best to take Melatonin on an empty stomach to make the most out of your dose. You can also take it after an hour or two of your meals. Just don’t take it in the middle or right after eating food, or else it would not be absorbed in your body adequately.

It is always important to ensure the proper use of supplements and medications to make the most out of them. 

Some people may use Melatonin with prescription sleep aids, like Benzodiazepines (Alprazolam, Lorazepam, etc), sedative antidepressants (Trazodone, Mirtazapine, etc), and hypnotics (Zolpidem, Zaleplon, etc), antihistamines (Diphenhydramine, Doxylamine, etc).

This can increase the risk of certain side effects, especially sedation and impaired mental alertness. This is why you need to make sure that you don’t pair Melatonin with sleep-inducing medications unless advised by your healthcare provider.
