Can you take Benadryl and Melatonin together?

Can you take Benadryl and Melatonin together?

No, you should not take Benadryl and Melatonin together. Benadryl is a sedating antihistamine and an OTC medication that can also help you sleep (1).

Melatonin, on the other hand, is a supplement of a naturally occurring hormone in your body that is primarily involved with regulating your sleep cycle (2). Benadryl and Melatonin don’t usually interact with each other.

However, they both may end up causing the same types of side effects, especially drowsiness or sedation. The combined side effects will most likely hit you harder than the side effects caused by any of them individually. This is why you should not combine the two together.

Benadryl, in general, should not be paired with other sleep aids, unless prescribed by your healthcare provider. Contaminant use of Benadryl either with supplemental sleep aids like Melatonin or prescription drugs like Xanax, Ativan, or typical sleeping pills can increase the risk of side effects.

What are the side effects associated with the use of Benadryl and Melatonin?

The major side effect of combining Benadryl and Melatonin is excess sedation or drowsiness. They both, although they work through two different mechanisms to induce sleep, can still overlap.

This increased sedation can reduce your mental alertness and may cause other symptoms like headache, blurry vision, dizziness, nausea, etc – and you should not engage in any activity that requires your full mental alertness if you have taken these two together.

What to do if you have accidentally taken Benadryl and Melatonin together?

If you have accidentally taken Benadryl and Melatonin once or twice, it’s alright. You don’t need to do anything about it. Melatonin is a supplement and it’s not a quick insomnia fix like sleeping pills.

It slowly works to make your sleep cycle normal naturally and it does not readily induce sleep. So, accidental administration of Benadryl and Melatonin together will not cause harmful effects right away.

However, long-term use will. It’s best to not make it a habit and prevent future accidents of the same kind.
