Can you take Benadryl with Ativan?

It is generally not recommended to take Benadryl and Ativan together because of the additive side effects. Both Benadryl and Ativan can induce sleep and the concomitant use can impair your mental alertness by causing drowsiness and lethargy.

This is why it’s best to not take these two meds together. Since Benadryl is an antihistamine with sedative properties, you can simply take another antihistamine that does not possess sedative properties. Examples of non-sedative antihistamines include:

  • Claritin (Loratadine)
  • Allegra (Fexofenadine)
  • Clarinex (Desloratadine)

These antihistamines are second-generation antihistamines that can last for an entire day. They don’t interact with Benzodiazepines or cause any additive side effects. Combining them with Lorazepam is absolutely safe. Benadryl, on the other hand, should not be paired with benzodiazepines like Ativan, Xanax, etc.
