Can you take Benadryl with Xanax?

It is not recommended to take Benadryl with Xanax, as both of the meds cause sedation. Taking them. Concomitantly can increase that risk.

However, they can be taken at separate times of the day. This is because both Benadryl and Xanax are short-acting drugs, which means they remain in your body for a short period of time.

So, if you leave a certain time gap between administering the two meds, you can take them on the same day.

  • If you’re taking Benadryl first, wait for 4-8 hours before taking Xanax.

In general, formulations containing diphenhydramine should not be taken along with any sedative medication, including other benzodiazepines like Ativan , or other anxiolytics like Buspar, as the concomitant use can increase the risk of disturbing side effects.

Pharmacist’s Advice

Taking Benadryl with Xanax doesn’t really make much sense and you can simply try another combination to help cope with your symptoms. Benadryl is an antihistamine, which is a sedative in nature.

If you’re already taking Xanax, it will be enough to put you to sleep and you shouldn’t need another medication for that.

As far as the allergy symptoms are concerned, there are plenty of second-generation antihistamines that are non-sedative in nature, like Loratadine, Desloratadine, Fexofenadine, etc.

They are just as good as Benadryl in counteracting allergy symptoms. This way you will be able to avoid that excess sedation you would most likely experience on Benadryl + Xanax.
