Can you take Banophen and Buspar together?

You can take Banophen and Buspar together, but the combination can cause excessive sedation in some individuals. Banophen contains Diphenhydramine, a sedative antihistamine.

Diphenhydramine is well known for causing drowsiness and this is exactly why this medication can be used as a sleep aid. Buspar contains Buspirone, an anti-anxiety medication.

Buspirone can also cause sedation in some individuals. If buspirone makes you sleepy, pairing it with Diphenhydramine will most likely increase sedation. If Buspirone doesn’t make you drowsy, the combination is okay to take since the two meds don’t necessarily interact with one another.

Potential side effects of taking Banophen and Buspar together

Banophen and Buspar can cause some side effects if used together. These include (1,2):

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure
  • Tremors
  • Seizures (in rare cases)
  • Increased risk of serotonin syndrome (if taken with other medications that increase serotonin levels)

The occurrence and intensity of these side effects can vary from person to person. Some people may experience serious side effects. This is because people are different and they can respond differently to medications.

Pharmacist’s advice

If Buspar makes you sleepy, you can take it before bedtime. As far as the use of Banophen is concerned, there are plenty of other antihistamines that are non-sedative and will manage your allergy symptoms effectively. Examples are:

  • Loratadine
  • Fexofenadine
  • Desloratadine

These antihistamines will not make you sleepy and Buspar will manage your anxiety while helping you sleep. This way you’ll deal with all of your symptoms without any adverse effects. Just make sure you don’t take any sedative medication with Banophen, like Benzodiazepines (Ativan, Xanax, etc), sedative antidepressants, etc.
