How to change taking Lexapro from night to morning?

The best way to change taking Lexapro from night to morning is to skip your night dose and take it in the morning instead, from where you continue taking the medication at the same time.

Although it is not the manufacturer’s recommendation, it is the most practised way of switching the timing of your antidepressant.

However, all people are different and they are on different doses of Lexapro with different severity of depression or whatever condition they are taking Lexapro for. Lexapro typically stays in your body for 30-32 hours, that’s why it is considered suitable to be taken once daily.

As you will have to skip a dose in order to change the timing, the concentration of the drug may get disturbed a little. If your condition can tolerate that, you will change the timing successfully.

However, if your condition demands to have a good concentration of the drug at all times, you will have to take half a dose at night and one full dose in the morning, from where you’ll continue to take the drug in the morning.

The best way to be certain whether or not you need that half a dose is to talk to your healthcare provider. Your doctor knows your medical history, dose, age, and the severity of your mental health condition, and he/she will guide you according to these factors.

Make sure you don’t take more of the prescribed dose while switching the timing. Skipping one dose is not as dangerous as doubling your dose is.

What is the best time of taking Lexapro?

The best time to take Lexapro could be different for different individuals, and it’s something you should discuss with your doctor.

Lexapro is associated with a number of side effects, and the timing at which you take this antidepressant can help tone down the severity of some of these side effects. Some examples include (1):

  • If it causes insomnia – take it in the morning.
  • If it causes sleepiness/drowsiness/fatigue – take it at night.
  • If it causes sexual side effects – take it in the morning.
  • If it causes loss of appetite – take it at night.
  • If it causes frequent urination – take it in the morning.

Make sure you discuss your side effects with your healthcare provider to learn how to mitigate them. In most cases, side effects last for about 2-4 weeks. However, some people may take longer to recover. A small number of people may not adjust to Lexapro at all.

If Lexapro causes unbearable side effects, shifting the timing will not help you enough. However, it’s not recommended to skip Lexapro doses or to stop it abruptly. If your doctor believes that Lexapro is not the right choice of antidepressant, he/she will safely switch you to another one.
