Does Wellbutrin cause auditory hallucinations?

Does Wellbutrin cause auditory hallucinations?

Wellbutrin does not commonly cause auditory hallucinations. However, Wellbutrin can trigger psychosis and mania in some people who may experience both auditory and visual hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that don’t really exist).

This side effect is not commonly reported on Wellbutrin. People who do experience it usually have other factors involved, like an underlying psychotic illness or long-term misuse of Wellbutrin.

If I look at someone who’s taking a standard dose of Wellbutrin for depression, he/she is unlikely to experience auditory hallucinations, as compared to those who are taking way too much Wellbutrin repeatedly. However, antidepressants work differently in different people.

What does research suggest?

There is limited research on auditory hallucinations caused by Wellbutrin. However, some cases are reported. A 2009 research study indicated that Wellbutrin can cause both auditory and visual hallucinations in people with psychosis (1).

The study also indicated that this antidepressant can mask an underlying psychosis, and the symptoms of the condition may come off as side effects of Wellbutrin. In some other case studies, people taking Wellbutrin and Valproate showed signs of auditory hallucinations (2).

Upon investigation, both medications were found to be associated with this side effect. As they were used together, the severity of the hallucinations significantly increased.

What to do if Wellbutrin causes auditory hallucinations?

Talk to your healthcare provider if you think Wellbutrin is causing auditory hallucinations. It is not likely for this antidepressant to cause such a side effect if you keep taking it properly, but it could affect some people.

If you’re experiencing other symptoms of mania as well and constantly finding yourself paranoid, Wellbutrin could be affecting your psychological health.

In such a case, your doctor will make sure if Wellbutrin is the one causing this side effect, or if some other factor is the main culprit.

If Wellbutrin is damaging your psychological functions, your doctor will most likely taper you off and safely switch you to another antidepressant. Make sure you don’t stop using Wellbutrin abruptly or make any changes to your prescription on your own.

It is also important to pair any substance of abuse with Wellbutrin, like Adderall, Vyvanse, etc. These medications are different from Wellburtin but can affect your psychological functions significantly. So, make sure you do not take anything with Wellbutrin that can negatively affect your mental health.
