Does Vistaril cause weight gain?

Does Vistaril cause weight gain?

Vistaril may or may not cause weight gain as a side effect. This antihistamine showed no weight gain during clinical trials. The researchers observed no effect of the drug on metabolism or the fat-burning process of the body.

However, such case studies showed an increase in appetite. As Vistaril is an anti-allergy, it is mostly used for a short period of time. The doctor usually asks you to stop when your allergic symptoms subside. In this time period, it is unlikely for Vistaril to cause weight gain.

What is the possible mechanism behind Vistaril-induced weight gain?

The possible mechanism behind Vistaril-induced weight gain is an increase in appetite (1). It is a known fact that when you begin to eat more, you begin to gain weight. Your body needs calories to convert into energy which is essential for your normal physiological functioning.

When you begin to eat more than your body needs for normal functioning, your body starts to store the excess food in the form of fat, in a way that preserves all the food for later energy consumption, but as you continue to eat more and more, this fat deposition continues to increase.

This leads to weight gain. However, this type of weight gain does not happen overnight and this type of weight is difficult to lose.

What to do if Vistaril makes you gain weight?

If Vistaril makes you gain weight, there are a few things that you can do. These include:

Talk to your doctor

It is important to talk to your healthcare provider if Vistaril makes you gain weight. It is not a common side effect and it is unlikely for Vistaril to cause weight gain. It is best to update your doctor and ask for proper advice.

If it’s not safe for you to continue using this medication, your doctor may switch you to another medication. Weight gain is not a good thing, especially if it is medication-induced. It is harder to lose and can give rise to a number of new complications.

Eat good food

It is important to opt for good and healthy foods if Vistaril is making you hungry over and over again. Lean protein and good fats are excellent food choices when you suffer from such a side effect.

They not only help you feel full but also increase your metabolism and they taste amazing. Make sure you incorporate protein in your breakfast to keep you going the entire day.

Steer clear of sugar and complex carbohydrates. Dieting does not necessarily mean completely stopping eating what you love. Dieting is portion control. You can eat literally everything, just in a minimal amount.

Exercise

Exercise is the best way to lose weight, no matter how you gain it. Medication-induced weight gain can be a little tricky to lose, but persistent exercise and a good diet can help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Vistaril can be involved with your body’s metabolism and the primary cause of weight gain is increased appetite. This type of weight can become difficult to lose, especially if you do not lead a healthy lifestyle. However, exercise can be an excellent addition to your routine in order to lose Vistaril-induced weight gain.
