In this short article, we will discuss whether Lunesta causes weight gain, as well as what steps to take if you suspect that this medication is affecting your weight. Additionally, we have explored some adverse effects and overdose symptoms associated with this medication.
Although it is not a common adverse effect, Lunesta may cause weight gain. However, the exact mechanisms by which this occurs are not known (1).
Just like any other medication, there are potentially serious side effects associated with Lunesta. Moreover, this medication can lead to an overdose (1,2).
If you experience any unusual symptoms while taking this medication, it is advisable to contact your doctor.
Does Lunesta cause weight gain?
Lunesta (Eszopiclone) may cause weight gain.
However, during clinical trials, this side effect was not commonly observed.
Why does Lunesta cause weight gain?
Considering that this is an uncommon adverse effect, no studies were found in the literature that explains “how” and “why” the medication Lunesta causes changes in weight.
However, according to information from the package insert of this medication, complex sleep behaviours, including sleep-walking, sleep-driving, and engaging in other activities while not fully awake, may occur at the beginning or at any time during treatment with Lunesta (1).
In this perspective, it is not impossible that you may eat while under the influence of this medication and not remember it afterward, which could be related to a possible weight gain.
What to do if Lunesta makes you gain weight?
If you experience weight changes during Lunesta treatment and it affects your quality of life, talk to your doctor.
They will likely investigate the cause of your issue, and if it is indeed associated with the use of the medication, they may consider adjusting the treatment or replacing Lunesta with another more suitable medication.
What are the commonly expected side effects of Lunesta?
Lunesta may cause side effects. If you experience any of the following symptoms persistently or if they are bothersome, it is important to inform your doctor (1,2):
- Headache
- Pain
- Daytime drowsiness
- Lightheadedness
- Dizziness
- Loss of coordination
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Heartburn
- Unpleasant taste

- Decreased sexual desire
- Painful menstrual periods
- Breast enlargement in males
Certain side effects can have serious implications. If you encounter any of the subsequent symptoms, it is crucial to promptly contact your doctor:

- Swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, throat, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Feeling that the throat is closing

Remember that additive effects occur with concomitant use of other central nervous system CNS depressants (as Ambien, Nortriptyline, Tramadol, etc.). In such cases, downward dose adjustment should be considered.
Does Lunesta cause overdose?
Lunesta can cause an overdose, which could lead to life-threatening consequences in some people. The most common manifestations of overdosage are drowsiness and coma (loss of consciousness for a period of time).
