Can you take NyQuil and ZzzQuil together?

Can you take NyQuil and ZzzQuil together?

No, you shouldn’t take NyQuil and ZzzQuil at the same time. Both NyQuil and ZzzQuil contain a sedative antihistamine – Diphenhydramine

If you take the meds together at the same time, you will end up overdosing on Diphenhydramine and the most concerning side effect would be excess sedation. NyQuil does contain other active ingredients which can work well with ZzzQuil, except for the antihistamine.

So, NyQuil and ZzzQuil have some differences, but these both contain an antihistamine. So, the combined use of these meds should be avoided.

Potential risks of taking NyQuil and ZzzQuil together

Combining NyQuil and ZzzQuil can increase the risk of side effects since they both contain Diphenhydramine. These side effects include (1):

  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth, nose, and throat
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Tremors or shaking

The occurrence and intensity of these side effects can vary from person to person, depending on various factors like age, weight, dosage strength, concomitant use of other medications, any underlying health conditions, and overall genetics.

NyQuil should generally not be paired with any medication that contains similar ingredients as this OTC formulation, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen), Delsym/Robitussin (dextromethorphan), and antihistamines.

Pharmacist’s advice

You can simply take NyQuil for your symptoms associated with the common cold and flu, and since the formulation already contains Diphenhydramine, it will also put you to sleep.

If you’re taking ZzzQuil, you can pair it with DayQuil, the daytime version of NyQuil, which does not contain Diphenhydramine. The common ingredients of DayQuil include:

  • Acetaminophen
  • Dextromethorphan
  • Phenylephrine

All of these meds are absolutely safe to take with ZzzQuil and there’s no interaction reported. So, you can either eliminate ZzzQuil and only take NyQuil or you can pair ZzzQuil with DayQuil.

Both of the options are free from side effects and will help counteract your symptoms, for sure. Just avoid using ZzzQuil and NyQuil or NyQuil and DayQuil together.

NyQuil, in general, should be avoided with drugs or supplements which induce sleep, such as benzodiazepines, OTC sleep aids, melatonin supplements, etc.
