Is it safe to take Melatonin and NyQuil together?

The use of Melatonin and NyQuil together may increase the risk of some additive side effects, especially sedation. This is because both Melatonin and NyQuil cause drowsiness and may affect your brain.

Melatonin is a hormonal supplement which helps regulate the sleep cycle. Since it’s not an actual medication, it does not necessarily ‘interact’ with NyQuil, which on the other hand contains 3 active ingredients. These are

  • Dextromethorphan
  • Acetaminophen
  • Doxylamine

Doxylamine is the one that makes NyQuil a bit risky with Melatonin because it is a sedative antihistamine, just like Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)

Doxylamine along with Melatonin may cause excess sedation in some people. It’s best to talk to your healthcare provider if you can take Melatonin with NyQuil, according to your health condition, age, and overall physiological well-being.

Alternatives to NyQuil while taking Melatonin

If you are taking Melatonin and you wish to add another education for your common cold and flu symptoms, you can take DayQuil, a daytime version of NyQuil. DayQuil contains somewhat similar ingredients but instead of Doxylamine, it contains Phenylephrine – a nasal decongestant.

This formulation is so-called because it is supposed to be taken in the daytime to help you with your symptoms. This can prevent the potential side effects that you may experience with the combination of Melatonin and NyQuil.

It is important to note that an individual’s response to the medication can vary. Patient-specific factors like age, weight, dosage strength, concomitant use of other medications, any underlying health conditions, and overall genetics can make a difference.

This is why it’s best to talk to your provider before combining any medication that you haven’t tried before.
