Can you open Clindamycin capsules?

Can you open Clindamycin capsules?

No, it’s not recommended to open Clindamycin capsules. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that is available in the form of capsules for a number of reasons.

Clindamycin may affect your throat and cause severe irritation if the powder directly comes in contact with your throat and it is extremely bitter in taste.

The antibiotic was made into a capsule to protect your throat from getting exposed to the drug and to mask the taste. This helped the manufacturer achieve patient compliance.

However, some people may find it difficult to swallow capsules, either out of phobia or some health condition that doesn’t allow them to physically swallow it. Either way, the thought of opening Clindamycin capsules can cross one’s mind.

I personally don’t recommend it as it would be too difficult for you to take. Even if you mix it into food, it would still somehow overpower the taste of the mixture and you will find it difficult to consume.

If you somehow manage to, it may cause throat irritation. So it’s best to not open Clindamycin capsules and take them as properly as possible. It is also important to make sure that you don’t take Clindamycin with anything that can affect your body’s ability to heal, like alcoholic beverages.

It is also important to check for the expiry date before you take antibiotics. Expired antibiotics should never be consumed, as they won’t help you with your infection adequately.

What’s the alternative if you can’t swallow Clindamycin capsules?

If you can’t swallow Clindamycin capsules, I recommend using an oral liquid dosage form of Clindamycin. However, you need to talk to your doctor or pharmacist to understand how much of the medication you’re supposed to take since the dose distribution is different in liquids.

Once you’re certain about the exact quantity of the medication, you can safely take it. This way you won’t have to worry about opening and consuming bitter Clindamycin capsules.

Final words

It’s best to not open Clindamycin capsule and take it as it is. If you find it difficult to swallow the tablets due to a health condition or a swallowing difficulty, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Remember, safe and effective use of medications is the key to achieving your desired therapeutic outcome.
