Can you drink alcohol while taking Terbinafine?

Can you drink alcohol while taking Terbinafine?

No, it’s not recommended to drink alcohol while taking Terbinafine. This medication is heavily metabolised by the liver and so is alcohol. Alcohol is not just metabolised by the liver, but it is actually hepatotoxic in nature and it damages liver function if used excessively.

This is why you should never use these two together as it would put a lot of burden on your liver. This is even more dangerous for people who already have hepatic insufficiency as the consequences could be life-threatening.

The primary purpose of Terbinafine is to eliminate the fungi responsible for the infection. It works by interfering with the production of a substance called ergosterol, which is essential for the growth and survival of fungal cells. (1,2)

According to experts, you should wait for at least 2-3 days after your last Terbinafine dose to consume alcohol so that both of them are not present in your system at the same time.

Potential risks of drinking alcohol while taking Terbinafine

When taking Terbinafine, drinking alcohol can lead to potential risks and negative effects on your health. Some of these risks include:

Liver damage

Both Terbinafine and alcohol are processed by the liver. Drinking alcohol while taking Terbinafine can put extra strain on your liver, increasing the risk of liver damage or impairment.

Reduced effectiveness of Terbinafine

Alcohol consumption may interfere with the way Terbinafine works in your body, potentially reducing its effectiveness in treating the condition it’s prescribed for, such as fungal infections.

Increased side effects

Combining Terbinafine with alcohol can amplify certain side effects of the medication, such as stomach upset, dizziness, or drowsiness.

Central nervous system effects

Both Terbinafine and alcohol can affect the central nervous system. Combining them may result in increased drowsiness, impaired coordination, and difficulty concentrating. Combining Terbinafine with caffeine can also affect your CNS, as Terbinafine can slow down the metabolism of caffeine.

Gastrointestinal issues

Drinking alcohol while taking Terbinafine may lead to gastrointestinal problems like nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain.

To ensure your safety and the effectiveness of the medication, it’s best to avoid alcohol while you are on Terbinafine treatment.

What to do if you have accidentally taken alcohol and Terbinafine together?

If you have accidentally taken alcohol and Terbinafine together, you should be fine. Drinking alcohol once or twice will not cause liver damage. However, you should stop right there and take no more alcohol if you wish to keep your liver healthy.

If you have been taking the two together and you feel pain in your upper abdomen, report to your healthcare provider as soon as you can. Your doctor may ask you for some blood tests to check your liver enzymes and the overall function of the organ.
