Can Protonix cause high blood pressure?

Can Protonix cause high blood pressure?

The chronic use of this drug can cause hypomagnesemia, with the potential to promote arrhythmia and also increase the risk of heart-related events (1). 

Besides that, Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as Protonix, can affect the activity of an enzyme called dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase, which is present in every cell (1).

This enzyme breaks down a substance called asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), which normally inhibits the production of nitric oxide (NO) in blood vessels. By impairing this enzyme, chronic use of PPIs may lead to higher levels of ADMA in the bloodstream.

Elevated ADMA levels can reduce the production of NO in blood vessels, which is associated with a higher risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) (1).

However, it is important to note that each individual may react differently to medications, and some people may experience specific side effects, including changes in blood pressure, while others may not.

Is there a potential connection between Protonix and high blood pressure?

As explained above, the possible connection between Protonix and high blood pressure is the long-term use of the drug leading to hypomagnesemia, which has the potential to promote arrhythmia, increase the risk of heart-related events and osteoporosis (2).

While hypomagnesemia in critically ill patients is often multifactorial, the use of PPIs is a proposed contributor. The pathophysiology behind the relationship of PPI use and hypomagnesemia is not well understood (2). 

What are the risk factors for developing high blood pressure while using Protonix?

There are a number of risk factors that may make some people more likely to develop high blood pressure (3).

  • Age – older people are more susceptible to high blood pressure caused by medications.
  • Being overweight is one of the most concerning risk factors for developing high BP and a number of other chronic diseases.
  • Genetics can play a role in high blood pressure, and having a family history of hypertension can increase the likelihood of developing it.
  • Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of hypertension.
  • Being inactive also makes you unhealthy in general and sensitive to diseases like hypertension.
  • Use of other medications that can potentially affect your blood pressure, including OTC antihistamines like Doxylamine, certain antidepressants, some painkillers, etc. 

What to do if Protonix causes high blood pressure? 

If your blood pressure is going high day by day and you think Protonix is responsible for that, talk to your healthcare provider. If that’s the case, your doctor may switch you to another class of drug. 

If your blood pressure is still not managed, you need to look for other reasons and get yourself properly diagnosed. High blood pressure is known as a silent killer for a reason and it is not recommended to leave it unmanaged. 

Make sure that you do not pair Protonix with anything that is not compatible with or anything which increases or decreases the effects of this medication – like alcohol, poor diet, excessive caffeine, and certain medications.


In conclusion, the use of Protonix is not directly linked to causing high blood pressure. However, if it is suspected to be causing high blood pressure, consulting with a healthcare provider is essential.
