Can you use Voltaren gel and a heating pad at the same time?

Can you use Voltaren gel and a heating pad at the same time?

No, you shouldn’t use a heating pad after applying Voltaren gel. The extra heat coming from the heating pad will increase the blood flow towards the area of muscle injury or pain, which is a good thing, but not when you have already applied Voltaren gel on the affected area.

What are the risks and precautions of using Voltaren gel and a heating pad simultaneously?

It is not recommended to use Voltaren gel and a heating pad simultaneously because excess heat coming from the pad can cause the more active drug to be dissolved in your blood than intended, which may cause side effects.

Voltaren is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which may cause redness or irritation at the site of gel application if too much of the drug is absorbed locally(1)

However, heating pads are quite good for relaxing your muscles and to relieve pain, and you can safely use them when you haven’t applied Voltaren gel and your skin is clear.

You can just use these two things at separate times and gain benefits from each one of them safely.

What is the best way to use Voltaren gel?

Make sure you apply Voltaren gel in the best possible way for maximum and safe pain relief. Some tips for proper application include:

  • Avoid over-rubbing the gel to prevent the majority of the drug from getting absorbed into your fingers, rather than the site of muscle pain.
  • Do not cover the affected area after applying the gel. Wait for at least 10-20 minutes before wrapping a bandage over it.
  • Do not take a shower for about an hour of gel application to let the drug get absorbed into your skin adequately.
  • Make sure to check the expiration date before applying the gel if it has been sitting on your shelf for a long time. Expired Voltaren gel may irritate your skin. So, do check the texture and consistency of the gel or check if it smells any different before you use it.

Conclusion

It is in your best interest to not use a heating pad right after applying Voltaren gel. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t use a heating pad at all. Just try to keep a safe time gap in between and make sure your skin is clean when placing a heating pad on the affected area.

If your pain is severe and topical remedies are not providing adequate pain relief, reach out to your doctor. You may need to take an oral NSAID instead of using a topical preparation for better symptomatic relief.
