Does Voltaren gel be used for restless leg syndrome (RLS)?

Voltaren gel may or may not help RLS. Voltaren contains Diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, which may relieve some pain associated with RLS – but it is not a promising treatment strategy for this condition.

Restless leg syndrome is associated with involuntary twitching of your leg muscles which can get quite severe while resting. Some people find relief when they move(1)

These symptoms are usually worse at nighttime and may cause abnormal movements while you’re asleep. The exact cause of RLS is still unclear, but it is most probably triggered by chemical imbalances in your brain and that can not get better with Voltaren gel.

What does research suggest?

There is limited research data available on the use of Voltaren Gel for restless leg syndrome (RLS). Voltaren Gel is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the management and treatment of symptoms associated with RLS.

One research study indicated that the application of Voltaren gel on the legs may reduce RLS symptoms in some patients. Some other studies have also indicated the exact same thing. However, all of these studies were small-sized and very few people were included to check the effects of Diclofenac.

More research is required to determine the safety and efficacy of Voltaren gel for the management and treatment of symptoms associated with RLS. it is not a common clinical thing yet, but it could be – if there is enough investigation on the topic.

What medications are used for restless leg syndrome?

There are a number of medicines that can be used for the management and treatment of RLS.

In usual practice, meds that can balance the levels of dopamine in your brain to relieve your symptoms, like Rotigotine – which is also approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for RLS(2)

Other medications can include muscle relaxants and meds that affect calcium channels. Make sure you reach out to your healthcare provider if you have symptoms associated with RLS to get the proper diagnosis and prescription.

Final words

You can try using Voltaren gel on your legs before you go to sleep for some symptomatic relief. It may help you with pain to some extent, but there is no way to predict whether or not it will provide adequate relief.

However, there are no side effects of applying the gel, if you are not allergic to Diclofenac – the active drug present in Voltaren gel.
