Can you take NyQuil and Allegra together?

It is generally not recommended to take NyQuil and Allegra together. This is because both NyQuil and Allegra contain antihistamines and two antihistamines are not supposed to be taken together.

Allegra is Fexofenadine which is used to treat a variety of allergy symptoms. NyQuil, on the other hand, contains Doxylamine, which is another antihistamine. The concomitant use can increase the risk of side effects.

What are the side effects associated with the use of NyQuil and Allegra together?

Using NyQuil and Allegra together can enhance the antihistamine-related side effects, especially drowsiness as both Fexofenadine and Doxylamine cause sedation (1,2).

This excess drowsiness can impair mental alertness, which affects some people more severely. Some other side effects may include constipation, upset stomach, abdominal pain, dry mouth, dry eyes, etc.

This is why it’s best not to use two antihistamines together. If we look at the bigger picture here, one anti-allergy is enough to treat your symptoms.

However, NyQuil does contain other active ingredients – Acetaminophen (painkiller/fever reducer) and Dextromethorphan (cough suppressant). If you’re looking for a med to cover a variety of cold and flu symptoms, take NyQuil.

However, if your condition demands the use of Allegra, make sure you don’t take them both simultaneously. Occasional use of Allegra with NyQuil could be okay if the meds are taken at separate times. NyQuil, in general, should not be paired with other antihistamines like Benadryl, Allegra, Zyrtec, Claritin, etc.

Final words

To sum up, you should never combine two antihistamines together unless your healthcare provider recommends to. This is because one antihistamine is generally enough to manage your symptoms and taking two antihistamines doesn’t really have the enhanced effects one would hope for.

This is why stick to taking only one antihistamine. If you don’t find your symptoms getting better, talk to your doctor.
