Can you split Zoloft into two doses?

Can you split Zoloft into two doses?

You can split Zoloft into two doses if your healthcare provider approves of that. If you’re already taking a once-daily tablet and you’re tolerating it well, I’d recommend not splitting it (1).

Antidepressants are generally intended to be taken once daily. Most new users don’t really know how the medication will make them feel or what side effects they will experience. Zoloft is one of those meds which can change the way it affects you if you take it at separate times (1).

For example, if Zoloft causes insomnia as a side effect, your healthcare provider would recommend taking it early in the morning to avoid possible sleep disturbances at nighttime (1,2).

If you split the dose and take the remaining half in the evening or at night, you will experience insomnia more intensely. This is why most doctors recommend taking it all at once.

If you think Zoloft is heavy on your stomach or causes nausea or acid reflux, you can try taking it with food, as gastrointestinal side effects are more common when the drug is taken on an empty stomach. (1)

If your side effects don’t subside or become severe, ask your doctor to reduce the dose a little to help your body adjust to the medication.

However, these changes should be done by your doctor and you shouldn’t deviate from your doctor’s recommendations. That’s the most important way to ensure the safe and effective use of antidepressants.

What are the risks and concerns of splitting Zoloft into two doses?

There are some risks associated with splitting Zoloft into two doses, including:

Inconsistent Dosages

When tablets are split, there is a risk of uneven distribution of the active ingredient, resulting in inconsistent dosages. This can lead to over or under-dosing, which can be dangerous and affect the effectiveness of the medication (3).

Loss of Coating and Taste

Splitting tablets can damage the coating, which can affect the taste of the medication and potentially reduce its effectiveness. Some people may even find it difficult to ingest the drug because of the unpleasant taste.

Reduced Effectiveness

Splitting the tablet can also reduce the effectiveness of the medication, as it may affect the way it is absorbed in the body. You may take half a dose with food, and the other half on an empty stomach – which can also affect how the medication gets absorbed in your body.

Incorrect Administration

Splitting tablets can also lead to incorrect administration, as it may be difficult to accurately split the tablet into equal halves, leading to inconsistent dosages (3).

Sertraline, the active drug in Zoloft, is available as capsules in doses higher than 100 mg, including 150 and 200 mg, which should not be split.

What should you do before splitting your Zoloft doses?

It is extremely important to talk to your doctor before you start splitting your Zoloft doses into two. If it is a possibility in your case, your doctor will guide you accordingly.

If not, your provider will give you the best possible advice, according to your age, dosage strength, side effects, and overall physiological well-being.

How to store split Zoloft?

To properly store split Zoloft tablets, it is important to keep them in a dry and cool place, away from heat and moisture. Avoid exposing the tablets to extreme temperature changes, as these can affect the integrity of the split tablet (5).

It is recommended to store the medication in its original packaging and keep it in a securely closed container to prevent the risk of accidental dropping. This helps ensure the safety and integrity of the medication (6).

How long can you store split Zoloft?

You can store your split Zoloft for 90 days if you store it at 25 ºC and 60 per cent of Relative Humidity (7).
