Can Citalopram be crushed?

Can Citalopram be crushed?

You can crush Citalopram if you find it difficult to swallow the tablet, but only if your doctor approves of this. You can mix the crushed tablet with water or with soft foods like pudding or applesauce.

I don’t recommend adding these tablets to water because of the extremely bitter taste of the drug. It’s better to add it in something that you can easily consume and that can mask the bitter taste.

Risks associated with crushing Citalopram

Crushing Citalopram may not come with any potential health hazards if you are doing it in the right way, but improper drug administration can create complications for you.

Citalopram is an SSRI antidepressant(1). These meds should be taken in the best possible way to make the most out of them. If you improperly consume half the crushed tablet and the other half or some part of it is lost, you will not have enough amount of drug in your body.

Important precautions to take when crushing Citalopram

If you are crushing Citalopram tablets, there are some precautions you need to take. Let’s discuss them.

  • Do not consume the crushed powder alone. It can stick to your throat and cause irritation.
  • Do not store crushed Citalopram for later use. Just crush the one you’re about to take and be done with it. Crush another tablet at the time of your next dose.
  • Do not let the food with crushed Citalopram powder sit for a long period of time.
  • Make sure you’re consuming the entire powder to maintain dose uniformity. The powder can sometimes stick to the container you’re putting it in. Make sure you properly scrape it all and take your entire dose.

Citalopram can also be split in half for the purpose of dose reduction. However, it should be discussed with your doctor first. Make sure you properly take your crushed Citalopram to ensure the safe and effective use of this medication. If you’re concerned about anything, reach out to your healthcare provider.
