Can you cut Citalopram in half?

Yes, you can cut Citalopram in half. Most Citalopram tablets are scored to help you break it in half. However, I don’t recommend cutting or splitting tablets that are not scored without having a proper tablet cutter.

If you’re splitting your tablet in half to make it easier for you to swallow, it doesn’t matter if your two halves are equal or not, as you’re going to consume the entire tablet.

However, if you’re cutting your tablet to take only half of it as one dose, make sure your tablet cuts into two equal halves (1). This is easier to achieve when your tablet is scored but if it’s not, you may end up breaking it into unequal halves.

Risks associated with cutting Citalopram tablets in half

The major concern with cutting Citalopram tablets in half is inaccurate dosing. Most people fail to split the tablets into two equal halves, which can affect the therapeutic efficacy of the drug.

This disturbs the dose uniformity of the medication and you may end up over or under-dosing. Citalopram is an antidepressant and it is crucial to take this medication daily at the same time, and at the exact same dosage strength.

Another possible concern is the rate of drug release. When the tablet is consumed whole, it starts to disintegrate once inside your stomach. Taking half a tablet results in the rapid release of the drug as the active ingredient directly gets exposed to your stomach fluids.

It may not affect people generally, but some people can experience more pronounced side effects, like nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, loss of appetite, stomach pain, etc – because of the rapid release of the drug.

Alternatives to cutting Citalopram

It’s best to ask your pharmacist for a suitable alternative to cutting Citalopram tablets. Citalopram is also available in the form of oral drops, that can be mixed with water or juices like apple or orange juice for ease of administration.

Make sure you don’t pair Citalopram or any other antidepressant with grapefruit juice, because of the potential interaction between the two (2). If you are concerned about any of the side effects or you are confused about taking Citalopram properly, reach out to your healthcare provider.
