Will I lose weight after Skyla removal?

Will I lose weight after Skyla removal?

You may or may not lose any weight after Skyla removal. This IUD device can affect women in a number of different ways and so does its removal. Some women experience weight loss after this IUD is removed and some end up experiencing weight gain.

Experts believe that the variable results are probably because of the hormonal effects of IUDs like Skyla that make different changes in different women (1). Make sure you talk to your healthcare provider about this.

What does research suggest?

There is a lack of research on the effects of Skyla removal on body weight, which is why there is no statistically significant data available to help understand the possible relationship between Skyla removal and weight changes.

However, Skyla can cause weight gain as a potential side effect and removing it would make some women go back to their initial weight. If you’re experiencing unexplained weight loss after Skyla’s removal, talk to your doctor.

Who is more likely to lose weight after Skyla removal?

As Skyla IUD is hormonal, it can make women gain weight in a number of ways. Some women gain water weight because the pregnancy-preventing hormones make their bodies retain more water, which adds up to their body weight.

Some women may lose it while Skyla is still attached. However, some women continue to gain water weight as Skyla keeps making them retain water. Such women are most likely to lose weight when Skyla is removed.

This is because your body not only stops retaining water when this IUD is removed but also starts to lose the excess fluid and you end up losing that water weight. Women who gain weight through dietary changes do not lose it that easily.

Studies have also suggested that removing Skyla IUD may cause a hormonal disturbance in some women who start gaining weight soon after the removal. Make sure you talk to your OB-GYN about this.

What to do if you are not losing your excess body weight after Skyla removal?

If Skyla made you gain a lot of weight and you’re not losing it after removing it, talk to your doctor. Studies have suggested that some women don’t lose weight even after a strict diet and exercise regimen.

This could be nerve-racking for women as hormonal changes make it extremely difficult for them to lose weight. This is where your doctor will figure out what to do next to help you get rid of all the excess weight that your body is carrying.

You may end up with another prescription pill to balance your hormones or accelerate your weight loss. However, don’t start using any medication without your doctor’s approval. You should continue with a good lifestyle and stay strong.

Don’t let your emotions make the journey even more difficult for you and don’t give up your healthy habits. They may not be working out that well for you at the moment, but they will make positive changes in your body in the long run.
