Can Skyla IUD make you gain weight?

Can Skyla IUD make you gain weight?

Skyla IUD may make you gain weight. Weight gain is considered a potential side effect of IUDs. However, every woman is different and they all have different physiological makeup.

Some may not gain weight at all and find IUDs extremely convenient. However, others may struggle with weight gain. If you’re gaining a significant amount of weight, consult your OB-GYN.

Generally, IUDs like Skyla do not cause weight gain or loss, and several factors could be at play if you are experiencing weight-related changes.

Research studies on Skyla IUD and weight gain

There are no detailed research studies available to explain why Skyla or other IUDs cause weight gain. However, such experts suggest that women who do end up gaining weight on IUDs do not gain fat. They actually gain water weight (1).

This is because Skyla and other IUDs are hormonal in nature and they release such hormones that prevent you from getting pregnant. These hormones can cause water retention in your body which may also result in bloating or heaviness around your stomach.

It’s just like gaining 3-5 pounds that you gain when you’re on your period. This water weight usually goes away when your body adjusts to these pregnancy-preventing hormones. On the other hand, some women may lose weight after Skyla’s removal.

What to do if Skyla IUD Makes you gain weight?

If you’re gaining weight on Skyla, you should consult your OB-GYN as soon as you can. Although IUDs are considered quite convenient and are known as one of the best birth control methods, they might still not suit every woman.

Only your doctor can guide you regarding the future use of such devices. If hormonal IUDs are not working out for you, your doctor may suggest you switch to a copper IUD, which is non-hormonal in nature and is not associated with any weight gain.

However, weight-related side effects are not the only ones that may disturb you and other possible side effects should also be monitored. Make sure you keep your diet and lifestyle healthy as much as you can. Your weight gain might not be linked to your IUD at all.

Your lifestyle factors can also be the cause of weight gain like an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, poor sleep hygiene, excessive use of alcohol, etc.

Some underlying health conditions may also make you gain weight like Polycystic ovaries syndrome (PCOS). Make sure you rule these factors out first.
