Will expired Famotidine still work?

Will expired Famotidine still work?

Expired Famotidine can still work if the drug has recently gone out-to-date. The process of drug degradation does not start to happen overnight and it takes some time for the drug to lose its effectiveness.

However, the drug is bound to lose its potency, one day or another. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends not to use expired medications as there is no guarantee regarding their safety and efficacy (1).

What are the dangers associated with the use of expired Famotidine?

Expired Famotidine may not help you with your increased stomach acidity because the drug eventually starts to lose its efficacy. The unresolved symptoms may continue to cause you pain and discomfort.

However, the drug itself will not cause any harm. It simply won’t work. This is why it’s best to stick to unexpired Famotidine when you need it the most.

Famotidine is sometimes taken with other acid reducers, like proton pump inhibitors, including Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, etc to manage acidity symptoms safely and effectively. Taking expired Famotidine will not help you achieve that therapeutic response.

It is important to ensure the safe and effective use of medications to make the most out of them. If you’re experiencing any rare or unusual side effects on Famotidine, such as tightness of the chest, difficulty in breathing, unexplained weight loss or gain, hair loss, etc – please reach out to your doctor.

What to do if you have taken expired Famotidine?

There’s nothing to worry about if you have taken a dose or two of expired Famotidine as the drug does not cause any type of toxicity. However, it will not resolve your problem either. This is why it’s best to get an unexpired Famotidine.

If you’re in a lot of pain or gastrointestinal discomfort, I would suggest you talk to your healthcare provider. You may need some other medication along with Famotidine to help control your symptoms actively.
