Will 3000 mg of Gabapentin get you high?

Will 3000 mg of Gabapentin get you high?

Yes, 3000 mg of Gabapentin can get you high. Euphoric effects of Gabapentin can be observed at doses lower than 3000 mg. Some people may begin to feel the buzz at 1500 mg.

However, getting high on Gabapentin can become your worst nightmare. Gabapentin has a high fatality rate, especially due to the consumption of higher doses.

The medication helps calm your anxiety, which is the most common reason why it is misused (1) . However, Gabapentin does far more than just get you all ‘high’.

This GABA analogue is associated with dreadful side effects, which is why most pharmacists call Gabapentin ‘one of the most dangerous medications in the world’. So yes, Gabapentin does get you high, but that is something you shouldn’t ever do to yourself.

What are the signs of getting high from Gabapentin?

People usually take high doses of Gabapentin to elicit the euphoric effects, including (2):

  • Feeling of relaxation
  • Extreme calmness
  • Elevated mood
  • Excitement
  • Being social
  • Drowsiness
  • Lack of balance
  • Slurred speech

The signs and symptoms of getting high from Gabapentin vary from person to person and depend on the amount of medication you have taken.

Some people may experience all of this at 1500 mg, whereas people with higher body weight and stronger mental strength may feel this way at 3000 or 4000 mg.

However, these effects don’t last that long and are followed by disturbing and life-threatening side effects. Gabapentin is one of the meds with the highest death rates after overdosing (3). Some of the dangerous side effects include:

  • Vision problems
  • Tremors
  • Confusion
  • Joint pain
  • Reduced heart rate
  • Difficulty in remembering things
  • Abdominal pain
  • Unsteadiness
  • Muscle twitching
  • Suicidal behaviour
  • Impaired motor coordination
  • Thrombocytopenia or decreased levels of platelets
  • Water retention
  • Rhabdomyolysis, a condition associated with abnormal breakdown of muscles
  • Convulsions
  • Swelling or tenderness in different parts of the body.

How to cope with the effects of getting high from Gabapentin?

Getting high from Gabapentin is no joke and you should seek immediate medical attention. However, most people don’t because getting high is what their goal usually is – but Gabapentin can do far more damage.

If you have accidentally taken a higher dose of Gabapentin than you intended to, reach out to your healthcare provider as soon as you can.

The dangers associated with taking too much Gabapentin can depend on your overall physiological well-being. Make sure you take only as much as your doctor has recommended and don’t misuse medications.
