In this brief article, we will discuss whether Gabapentin may reduce heart rate and explore what to do if you experience a reduced heart rate as a result of taking Gabapentin. We will also examine research on reduced heart rate induced by Gabapentin and briefly mention the possibility of withdrawal symptoms and side effects associated with this medication.
Gabapentin is not known to reduce heart rate and there is no robust scientific evidence to attribute this effect to Gabapentin in humans (1,2). Only two pre-clinical studies, carried out with rodents, indicate this possibility (3,4).
Talk to your doctor if you suspect that Gabapentin is causing a reduction of your heart rate. If your suspicion is confirmed, your doctor may attempt to adjust the treatment.
It is important to know that Gabapentin can cause withdrawal symptoms and can also cause adverse effects (1.2).

Does Gabapentin reduce heart rate?
Gabapentin is not known to reduce heart rate and there is no robust scientific evidence to attribute this effect to Gabapentin in humans.
This type of effect is not even described in the leaflet as a rare reaction (1,2).
What to do if you suspect that Gabapentin is reducing your heart rate?
Talk to your doctor if you suspect that Gabapentin is causing a reduction of your heart rate.
They will likely investigate the cause of your issue, and if it is indeed associated with the use of the medication, they may consider adjusting the treatment or replacing Gabapentin with another more suitable medication.
You should not stop using the medication without consulting your doctor first.
What does research studies say about the effects of Gabapentin on heart rate?
As previously mentioned, there are no robust studies in humans that indicate this effect of Gabapentin.
Only two pre-clinical studies were identified in the literature, carried out with rodents, which indicate the possibility that the drug Gabapentin reduces blood pressure and heart rate in these animals (3,4).
Can Gabapentin cause withdrawal symptoms?
Withdrawal symptoms are common among individuals who abruptly stop using this medication. The symptoms may include (1,2):
- Anxiety
- Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
- Nausea
- Pain
- Sweat
If Gabapentin needs to be discontinued, your doctor will suggest an appropriate taper schedule for you to ensure a safe withdrawal.
Tell your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms when your dose of Gabapentin is decreased.
What side effects are associated with Gabapentin treatment?
The most common adverse effects of Gabapentin treatment include (1):
- Dizziness
- Somnolence
- Peripheral edema
- Ataxia
- Fatigue
- Viral infection
- Fever
- Nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Hostility
Talk to your doctor if you experience these persistent problems while taking this medication.
The following adverse reactions deserve greater attention and caution:
- Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (Multiorgan hypersensitivity);
- Anaphylaxis and Angioedema;
- Driving Impairment; Somnolence/Sedation and Dizziness;
- Suicidal Behavior and Ideation;
- Respiratory Depression;
- Neuropsychiatric Adverse Reactions in Children 3 to 12 Years of Age
If you experience any of these adverse reactions, seek immediate medical attention.
In addition, increased seizure frequency may occur in patients with seizure disorders if Gabapentin is abruptly discontinued.
Remember, the safe and effective use of medications is the key to achieving your desired therapeutic outcome. So, make sure you stick to the recommended dose and do not take Gabapentin more often.
It is also important to check for the expiry date before you take this medication, as expired meds may not be potent enough to help you with your symptoms and can lead to therapeutic failure.
