Why is it not recommended to split Cialis tablets?

It is not recommended to split Cialis or other Tadalafil tablets because of the following reasons:

  • Uneven dose distribution
  • Chances of early drug disintegration in the stomach
  • Bitter un-masked taste

Uneven dose distribution

Uneven dose distribution is one of the main concerns why it is not recommended to split Cialis tablets. The tablets are asymmetrical in shape and there is no way to split them into two equal halves.

This makes it difficult to achieve dose uniformity and you may end up taking more or less than you are supposed to.

Chances of early drug disintegration in the stomach

Cialis tablets are film-coated and they are not directly compressed tablets. Film coating allows your drug to remain intact in the presence of gastric acid and the coating prevents acid degradation of the main active ingredient present inside.

Splitting the tablet will make it vulnerable to acid penetration and it may degrade your tablet and its actual potency.

Bitter un-masked taste

Another purpose of coating the tablets is to mask the unpleasant and bitter taste of the main active ingredient present in the drug.

When you split it in half, some of the components will start to come out of the tablet while it’ll inside your mouth. This can not only cause a bitter taste in the mouth but can also cause throat irritation.

What are the dangers associated with splitting Cialis tablets?

As we have discussed the reasons why it’s not recommended by the manufacturers to split the tablet and it literally says that on the top of the packaging. However, a split tablet can still be used.

Some people opt for tablet splitting for the purpose of cost reduction and there isn’t any significant danger in doing so. If you have done it, don’t worry about any physical harm and it will most likely not be a problem. However, it’s best to avoid that in future.

It is also important to make sure that you are taking Cialis in the best possible way. Always check for drug expiry before you take it, as expired medications won’t help your symptoms adequately.
