What would happen after accidentally taking two antibiotics?

If you have accidentally taken a double dose of your antibiotic, you will most likely not experience dangerous side effects. Most antibiotics are considered non-toxic if you take 2 standard doses at one time.

However, it hugely depends on the antibiotic you are taking, its dosage strength, and how well your body generally tolerates it. If you’re taking 1 gram of your antibiotic once daily, taking two of these can cause some disturbing side effects.

However, if you’re on a 250 mg dose and you accidentally take it twice, you will not be subjected to unusual or unbearable side effects.

Common side effects of taking a double dose of your antibiotics accidentally

Accidental overdose of meds is common as people sometimes forget that they have already taken the medication and take it again.

If we specifically talk about antibiotics, doubling up on the standard dose will not significantly affect your health, but can cause some side effects. These include (1):

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Flatulence
  • Upset stomach
  • Heartburn or acid reflux
  • Abdominal pain
  • Palpitations

As you can see, most of the side effects are gastrointestinal. This is because antibiotics are usually heavy on your stomach even at therapeutic doses.

Overdosing on these medications can cause increased gastrointestinal side effects that will begin to subside within a few days. However, people are different and they respond differently to medications.

If you think you have overdosed on your antibiotic and you start to feel unusual, immediately seek medical attention.

How to ensure the proper use of antibiotics?

It is extremely important to take antibiotics just as prescribed by your doctor. Taking more or less than the prescribed dose can either cause side effects or result in insufficient therapeutic efficacy. This is why proper use of antibiotics is essential to make the most out of them.

If you find it difficult to remember whether or not you have taken your antibiotic, try keeping a pill box and place it somewhere you can easily find, like on your kitchen counter or your work desk. This can help you remember to take the antibiotic and prevent accidental overdosing.

It is also important to make sure that you don’t pair the antibiotic you are taking with any other medication or food that is not compatible with it. Even some over-the-counter medications, like antacids, can react with certain antibiotics.

This is why you should not pair any medication with your antibiotic with anything that can interfere with its efficacy. Always remember, proper use of medications is the key to achieving a safe and effective therapeutic response.
