What to do if you have accidentally taken two Zyrtec doses?

If you have accidentally taken two Zyrtec (Cetirizine) doses and you feel unusual, immediately seek medical attention. Generally, a single extra dose of Zyrtec will not significantly affect your health.

The drug will most likely make you drowsy and may affect your mental alertness, but it will not put your health at risk. Although the FDA has recommended 10 mg (1 Tablet) as the maximum daily dose, taking an extra pill will not be dangerous, in any sense of the way.

In fact, a lot of healthcare providers may increase the dose of Zyrtec to 20 mg for a better therapeutic response than the 10 mg dose failed to achieve.

So, don’t worry about that extra pill you took and be careful the next time. However, you should be careful while you’re low on mental alertness. Do not drive or engage in any other activity that requires your full attention.

Even normal standard doses of Zyrtec can make some people more drowsy than others. This is why it’s best to take your anti-allergy in the evening or at bedtime.

What are the side effects associated with the increased Zyrtec dose?

High Zyrtec doses are usually associated with the following side effects (1):

  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Decreased mental alertness

These side effects can vary from person to person. Some people are generally more sensitive to medications and they may end up feeling more intense side effects.

However, the adverse effects usually begin to lose their strength once the concentration of the drug in your body drops down. Till then, make sure you don’t engage in any activity that requires your full mental alertness. If you continue to feel unusual, reach out to your healthcare provider.

It is also important to make sure that you don’t pair other anti-allergy with Zyrtec – like Benadryl, Claritin, etc as it will also result in an increased amount of antihistaminic activity in your body.

Final words

To sum up, it is not recommended to take more than 10 mg of Zyrtec – but accidentally taking it once is not likely to harm you. However, people are different and they can respond differently to medications.

People who are generally sensitive to medicines, have a weak immune system, or have hepatic insufficiency can face negative consequences of overdosing on a medication. This is why it’s important to ensure the safe and effective use of medications to make the most out of them.
