What happens after accidentally taking Benadryl and Zyrtec together?
If you have accidentally taken Benadryl and Zyrtec together, you will most likely experience mild side effects. However, the severity of side effects depends on the exact doses taken.
Both Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) and Zyrtec (Cetirizine) are antihistamines and they work in almost the same way to counteract your allergy symptoms.
Antihistamines are sometimes used together in some cases, but only when a healthcare provider prescribes a suitable combination. If your condition demands the use of two antihistamines, your doctor will help you space them out.
Potential side effects of taking Benadryl and Zyrtec together
Although it is not recommended to take two antihistamines at the same time, accidental or one-time administration will not lead to significant or life-threatening complications. Some commonly expected side effects are (1,2):
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Excess sedation
- Dry mouth
- Dry skin
- Dry eyes
- Constipation
These side effects can vary from person to person. Some people may feel too drowsy and that’s it. The intensity of side effects depends on a lot of different factors, like your age, weight, and overall health status.
Although the concomitant use of two antihistamines is frowned upon, it is used in case of severe allergic reactions, but only when prescribed by a doctor. Just remember not to combine Benadryl or any other antihistamine with similar medications.
In some cases, two antihistamines can be used together if they are manufactured into different dosage forms – like Benadryl topical cream can be used with oral Benadryl in some cases. However, oral antihistamines should not be combined.

It’s in your best interest to not use Benadryl and Zyrtec together. If you think one antihistamine is not enough to help your symptoms, please reach out to your doctor and talk about it. Don’t just add another medication on your own.
