What cold medications should be avoided while taking Adderall?

Cold medications that should be avoided while taking Adderall or should be used with caution include:

  • Pseudoephedrine
  • Dextromethorphan

Pseudoephedrine

The concomitant use of Adderall and Pseudoephedrine should also be avoided because of the combined effects of these meds on your heart rate and blood pressure. This can lead to complications, especially in cardiac patients.

This is why this combination should be avoided at all costs if you have an active cardiac disease. If you don’t, your doctor may ask you to use them cautiously.

Dextromethorphan

Dextromethorphan should be avoided or used with caution while taking Adderall. This is because both medications can affect the amount of excitatory monoamine neurotransmitter serotonin in your brain.

Dextromethorphan can increase the amount of active serotonin by inhibiting its reuptake back into the presynaptic neuron. Adderall, on the other hand, increases the overall release of serotonin from the neuron.

Both of them together can significantly increase the activity of this excitatory chemical. Serotonin normally is responsible for modulating mood, cognition, reward, learning, memory, and various other psychological processes.

However, too much serotonergic activity increases the risk of rare, but extremely serious serotonin syndrome. This syndrome is associated with a number of disturbing symptoms, including:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Fever with chills
  • confusion
  • Restlessness and fatigue
  • Headache, which often feels like your head is pounding
  • Changes in blood pressure and/or temperature
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Bradycardia
  • Tremors
  • Muscle twitching and muscle pain
  • Shivering and goosebumps

What cold medications are considered safe to be used with Adderall?

There are a few meds that you can use with Adderall without any major side effects. These include:

  • Mucinex original formulation which only contains Guaifenesin (Avoid Mucinex D and Mucinex DM)
  • Vitamin C
  • Zinc
  • Honey
  • Cough drops
  • Acetaminophen
  • Ibuprofen or Naproxen

It is best to talk to your doctor and pharmacist if you have a cold while taking Adderall. It’s not always about the medication, but the appropriate dosage strength. Your provider will determine the most suitable treatment regimen to help you with your cold and flu.

Adderall is a psychostimulant and its proper use is essential. Whenever you are not sure about the best suitable medications to take with Adderall for common ailments or allergies, you should ask your doctor. Never start taking any medication with Adderall on your own.
