What allergy medications are safely used with Adderall?

Antihistamines are considered safe to be used with Adderall, which is an Amphetamine. The examples include:

  • Loratadine
  • Cetirizine
  • Fexofenadine
  • Levocetirizine

These antihistamines are probably the most commonly used and they control a huge number of allergy symptoms, like sneezing, runny nose, watery and itchy eyes, hives, etc. Some of them are sedative in nature and help induce sleep.

According to research studies, these antihistamines do not interact with Adderall and can be used safely together. However, antihistamines are often misused for the purpose of sleep induction.

Misuse of meds is never a good thing and you can suffer from a number of side effects in the long run. This is why it’s best to limit the unnecessary use of meds.

What allergy and cold medications should be avoided with Adderall?

There are some anti-allergies which should be avoided when taking Adderall unless recommended by a healthcare provider. Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) should not be paired with Adderral.

These medications have different mechanisms of action and can potentially interact, leading to increased side effects or diminished effectiveness. Taking both Benadryl and Adderall at the same time may increase the risk of certain side effects, such as increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and nervousness.

Some cold medications – including chest decongestants like Pseudoephedrine should also be avoided with Adderall because of possible harmful interactions between them (1).

The concomitant use of these meds can cause cardiac side effects, like high blood pressure, fast heartbeat, palpitations, etc. Psychological side effects are also expected like restlessness, anxiety, confusion, insomnia, etc.

Final words

It is always best to consult your healthcare provider if you want to take any other medication, including OTC meds, while you are taking Adderall. It is a schedule drug which should be carefully paired with other medications.

If you take anything with Adderall that increases its effects or prolongs the stay time of this medication in your body, you will be at a higher risk of Adderall addiction. Yes, it may not be the case with just taking the meds once or twice – and consistent use is what you need to look out for.

However, it’s best to seek medical advice before pairing any medication with Adderall, especially in those people who have any other underlying health condition or people who suffered from Adderall addiction before.
