What cold medications are safe to take with Prednisone?

Prednisone can be taken safely with the majority of common cold and flu medications. These include:

  • Expectorants

Prednisone and Expectorants can be concomitantly used, like Guaifenesin, an active ingredient present in Mucinex. The two drugs do not interact with one another.

  • Acetaminophen

Acetaminophen is the safest painkiller and fever reducer and is most commonly used. It can be safely taken with Prednisone. However, people who have hepatic insufficiency should not take Acetaminophen.

  • Antihistamines

Antihistamines can be safely taken with a Prescription as they don’t really interact with one another. Common antihistamines include Benadryl, Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec etc.

  • Nasal decongestants

Nasal decongestants like Pseudoephedrine and Phenylephrine can be used along with Prednisone. However, the doses should be adjusted because both Prednisone and nasal decongestants can cause insomnia as they increase excitation and mental alertness. It is also recommended to avoid administering these meds in the evening or at nighttime.

What cold medications should be avoided with Prednisone?

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – like Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Naproxen, etc should not be used with Prednisone because of the potential interactions.

Prednisone and NSAIDs both can damage the protective lining of your stomach and cause severe gastrointestinal side effects, like ulceration, GI bleeding, severe abdominal pain, etc (1).

These side effects can be life-threatening for people who already have an underlying gastrointestinal disease. Prednisone, being a Corticosteroid, can reduce your immunity and can make you prone to infections and NSAIDs can mask the symptoms if an infection occurs.

The best way to avoid these side effects is to avoid using Prednisone and NSAIDs concomitantly.
